Veneers · San Diego, CA
At our City Heights office we lead with Bioclear and direct composite veneers: tooth-colored resin bonded directly onto your teeth with little or no enamel removal, often completed in a single visit. The result is a brighter, more even smile — with far less commitment than traditional porcelain veneers.
Traditional porcelain veneers are beautiful and long-lasting, but they come with a significant trade-off: the dentist must permanently shave a layer of enamel from the front of each tooth before the ceramic shells can be bonded on. Once that enamel is gone, it does not grow back — you are committed to veneers, or some equivalent restoration, for the life of that tooth.
Bioclear and direct composite veneers work differently. Instead of removing tooth structure, the dentist adds to it. Tooth-colored composite resin is bonded directly onto the existing enamel surface and sculpted into the desired shape. With the Bioclear method, custom clear plastic matrices are wrapped around each tooth and warmed, flowable composite is injection-molded into them — producing a smooth, sealed contour at the gumline that rivals lab-fabricated restorations. With direct composite, the dentist hand-layers and sculpts the material freehand.
The practical advantages are real: most patients need little or no anesthesia because little or no enamel is removed; treatment is often completed in a single appointment for several teeth at once; if a veneer chips years later it can usually be repaired chairside rather than fully replaced; and the overall approach is typically more affordable than porcelain, which requires multiple appointments and laboratory fabrication fees.
We still offer porcelain veneers when they are the right clinical choice — for example, when a patient has significant existing restorations or wants the absolute maximum in long-term stain resistance. But for most patients seeking a cosmetic improvement to healthy, structurally sound teeth, composite or Bioclear veneers accomplish the goal with far less intervention and far more flexibility.
Veneers are a cosmetic treatment, not a medical necessity — so candidacy is about your goals and the current condition of your teeth. These are situations where composite or Bioclear veneers tend to work well:
Composite and Bioclear veneers work best on structurally healthy teeth with adequate enamel for bonding. Active decay, gum disease, or significant bite problems need to be addressed before cosmetic work begins. A consultation lets us evaluate your specific situation and tell you honestly what is and is not achievable.
We review your smile goals, evaluate the health of your teeth and gums, check your bite, and look at any existing restorations. Photographs help us map what is achievable. If you want to whiten your natural teeth first, we schedule that before veneer placement — composite is shade-matched at placement and does not change color later.
You choose the shade and shape you want, guided by what will look natural with your skin tone and facial proportions. The tooth surface is cleaned and, if needed, lightly air-abraded or roughened to help the composite bond securely. For most patients this step requires no drilling and no anesthesia.
The tooth surface is conditioned with a bonding agent. With the Bioclear method, a custom clear matrix is placed around the tooth and warmed composite is injection-molded into it. With direct composite, the material is hand-layered and shaped in increments. Each layer is cured with a light to harden it before the next is placed.
Once the composite is cured, your dentist refines the shape with rotary instruments, checks your bite carefully, and adjusts until the occlusion feels natural. High spots are refined — this step is important and should not be rushed.
The veneer surface is polished by hand to a high gloss that closely mimics natural enamel. You leave the appointment with a finished result — no waiting for a lab, no temporary veneers in most cases.
We review home care: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss carefully, and avoid using front teeth as tools. Depending on your bite and habits, a nightguard may be recommended to protect the work. A polishing visit every year or two keeps the surface looking its best.
Not sure which type of veneer is right for you?
A consultation is the best way to find out — we evaluate your teeth, review your goals, and tell you honestly what is achievable.
Dental veneers are a cosmetic procedure. Most dental insurance plans do not cover cosmetic treatments — they cover preventive and restorative care, not elective smile improvements. In the uncommon situations where a veneer is needed to restore a tooth's function after damage, partial coverage may apply, but this depends entirely on your specific plan and the clinical documentation.
Because insurance coverage for veneers is rarely available, we encourage patients to ask our front desk for a breakdown of fees before treatment begins. Composite and Bioclear veneers are generally more affordable than porcelain because they eliminate laboratory fabrication costs. We can discuss what is realistic for your situation and whether phasing treatment over time makes sense.
