Sensitive teeth — what to do

Sharp, short bursts of pain to cold, sweet, or air are very common — and usually treatable. Here is how to think about what is causing it.

This is not a diagnosis. This page describes common causes and general self-care suggestions. It cannot replace an in-person exam. If you are unsure, please call us — we will help you figure out what to do.

Possible causes

Common reasons behind sensitive teeth. Only an exam can confirm the cause for you.

  • Gum recession exposing the softer root surface of the tooth
  • Enamel wear from acidic drinks, grinding, or aggressive brushing
  • A small cavity that has not yet caused real pain
  • A loose or failing filling or crown
  • Recent whitening — sensitivity usually fades within a few days

When to come in — or call right away

Any of the following deserves prompt evaluation. Call us today.

  • Pain that lingers for more than a few seconds after a cold or sweet trigger
  • Pain that wakes you up at night
  • Sensitivity in only one tooth, especially with biting pain
  • Sensitivity combined with visible decay or a broken filling
  • Pain that no longer responds to a sensitivity toothpaste after 2–4 weeks

What you can try right now

These are general suggestions, not medical advice. Follow the directions on any product you use, and ask your dentist or doctor if you are unsure.

  • Switch to a sensitivity toothpaste (potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride) and use it twice a day — give it at least 2 weeks.
  • Use a soft-bristled brush and ease up on pressure.
  • Cut back on acidic drinks (soda, citrus, sparkling water) or use a straw.
  • Do not brush immediately after acidic food or drink — wait about 30 minutes.
  • If you grind at night, a night guard can make a big difference.
