Is jaw swelling always a dental emergency?

Not always — but it should be evaluated promptly because some causes (a spreading infection) can become dangerous quickly. If you have fever, trouble swallowing, or the swelling is growing, treat it as urgent.

Could it be an abscess?

A dental abscess is one of the most common causes of jaw or facial swelling. Abscesses do not resolve on their own — the source of infection has to be addressed by a dentist, even if antibiotics calm it down temporarily.

Should I go to the ER or call the dentist?

If the swelling is affecting your breathing, swallowing, or is spreading rapidly, go to the ER first. Once you are medically stable, contact us to treat the dental source. For swelling without those red flags, call our office for a same-day appointment.

Will antibiotics alone fix it?

Antibiotics can calm a dental infection, but they do not remove the source — a dead nerve, a deep gum pocket, or an infected tooth. Without addressing the cause, the infection typically returns.

Possible causes

Common reasons behind swollen jaw. Only an exam can confirm the cause for you.

✓A dental abscess — an infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum
✓A partially erupted wisdom tooth trapping bacteria under the gum (pericoronitis)
✓A sinus infection that causes swelling near the upper jaw
✓A cyst that has been slowly growing around a tooth root
✓A bruise or trauma to the jaw from a fall, sport, or accident

Swelling that spreads toward your eye, neck, or under the chin — go to the ER
Difficulty swallowing or breathing — call 911 immediately
Fever above 101°F (38.3°C) combined with jaw swelling
You cannot open your mouth more than a finger-width
A bad taste in your mouth suggesting pus is draining from somewhere

What you can try right now

•A cold compress on the outside of the cheek for 10–15 minutes at a time can reduce swelling in the first 24–48 hours.
•Take an over-the-counter pain reliever following the package directions, if appropriate for your health history.
•Do not squeeze, poke, or try to drain any swelling yourself.
•Stay well hydrated and stick to soft foods until you can be seen.
•If swelling is spreading quickly, worsening rapidly, or affecting your breathing or swallowing — seek emergency care now.
