Bleeding gums — what to do
Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding when you brush or floss is your mouth telling you something — most of the time, it is reversible if you act on it.

Possible causes
Common reasons behind bleeding gums. Only an exam can confirm the cause for you.
- ✓Early gum disease (gingivitis) from plaque building up at the gumline
- ✓Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush
- ✓Starting to floss again after a long break — this usually settles in a week or two
- ✓Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menstrual cycle) making gums more reactive
- ✓Certain medications, including blood thinners
When to come in — or call right away
Any of the following deserves prompt evaluation. Call us today.
- ⚠Bleeding that does not stop after 10–15 minutes of gentle pressure
- ⚠Gums that are pulling away from the teeth or look much darker than usual
- ⚠Loose teeth, or teeth that have shifted recently
- ⚠Persistent bad breath or a bad taste that brushing does not fix
- ⚠You are on a blood thinner and bleeding does not slow
What you can try right now
These are general suggestions, not medical advice. Follow the directions on any product you use, and ask your dentist or doctor if you are unsure.
- •Brush gently twice a day with a soft-bristled brush — pressure does not clean better, technique does.
- •Floss or use interdental brushes daily, even where it bled yesterday; expect it to settle within 1–2 weeks of consistent flossing.
- •Rinse with warm salt water once or twice a day.
- •Avoid tobacco — it masks bleeding and makes gum disease worse.
- •If you are on a blood thinner, do not stop it on your own — talk to the prescribing provider.
