Cracked tooth — what to do

A cracked tooth does not always look dramatic. Sharp pain on biting, or pain that comes and goes with temperature, is often the first sign. Catching it early usually means a smaller repair.

This is not a diagnosis. This page describes common causes and general self-care suggestions. It cannot replace an in-person exam. If you are unsure, please call us — we will help you figure out what to do.

Possible causes

Common reasons behind cracked tooth. Only an exam can confirm the cause for you.

  • Biting down on something hard (ice, popcorn kernels, hard candy)
  • Clenching or grinding teeth, often at night
  • A large old filling that no longer supports the surrounding tooth
  • A blow to the mouth from sports or a fall
  • Years of normal wear on a tooth that has been treated before

When to come in — or call right away

Any of the following deserves prompt evaluation. Call us today.

  • A visible split that runs all the way down the tooth
  • A piece of the tooth that comes off in your hand
  • Severe, lingering pain to hot or cold
  • Swelling around the tooth or in the gum next to it
  • Bleeding from inside the tooth that will not stop

What you can try right now

These are general suggestions, not medical advice. Follow the directions on any product you use, and ask your dentist or doctor if you are unsure.

  • Stop chewing on that side until you are seen.
  • Rinse with warm water to keep the area clean.
  • If a piece came off, save it in a small container — bring it to your appointment.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the package.
  • A cold compress on the cheek can help if there is swelling.
