Tooth-Colored Fillings · City Heights, San Diego
A cavity does not have to mean a mouth full of metal. At our office on University Ave between 52nd and 54th Streets — next to Vien Dong Supermarket, right in City Heights — we place composite resin fillings that are matched to the natural color of your tooth. Whether the cavity is on a visible front tooth or a hard-working back molar, composite bonds directly to the tooth and blends in so that most people will never know it is there.
We have been caring for City Heights families since the 1990s and have seen more than 10,000 patients in our community. We accept Denti-Cal, Medi-Cal, and most major PPO plans, and we publish straightforward fees for cash-pay patients — no surprise charges. Our team speaks English, Spanish (hablamos español), and Vietnamese (nói tiếng Việt), so you can ask every question in the language you are most comfortable with.
We are on the south side of University Ave between 52nd and 54th Streets, next to Vien Dong Supermarket — the heart of City Heights. If you are anywhere along University, Fairmount, or Euclid, you are only a few minutes away. Parking is available on site, and MTS Route 7 stops within a block of our door.
A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay. The dentist removes the softened, infected portion of the tooth, cleans the area, and fills the space with a restorative material so the tooth can function normally again. Without treatment, a cavity continues to grow — and a larger cavity can eventually reach the nerve and require a root canal, or weaken the tooth to the point that a crown is needed instead of a simple filling.
Composite resin is a tooth-colored plastic-and-glass material that is placed in layers, shaped to match your bite, and hardened with a curing light. It bonds to the existing tooth structure, which means less healthy tooth sometimes needs to be removed compared with older silver (amalgam) fillings. We do still offer amalgam as an option for some patients, but composite is now the most common choice for fillings here at our practice — it is both functional and natural-looking on front and back teeth alike.
For patients who want to prevent cavities before they start, we also place dental sealants — thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Sealants do not replace fillings, but they can stop early decay from progressing and are especially useful for children and teens.
We take a focused digital X-ray of the area and examine the tooth directly. This tells us how deep the decay goes — whether a standard filling is enough, or whether the cavity has reached the nerve and a different treatment (like a root canal or crown) is needed first. We will always tell you clearly which situation you are in before any work begins.
We apply a topical numbing gel first, then a local anesthetic so the tooth and surrounding gum are fully numb before we begin. Most patients feel nothing more than a dull sense of pressure. If you are anxious about dental procedures, let us know — we are used to working with patients who need a gentler pace.
Once the area is numb, we remove the decayed material, clean the cavity, and apply the composite resin in layers, each cured with a light. We shape the filling to match your natural bite and polish it smooth. One tooth typically takes less than an hour, and most patients return to normal eating once the anesthetic wears off.
Before you walk out, we tell you exactly what was done, what Denti-Cal or your PPO will cover, and what — if anything — you owe. Cash-pay patients receive an upfront fee with no hidden charges. If a follow-up visit is needed (for example, if a very large cavity requires a second appointment or a referral for more complex work), we schedule that before you leave.
A cavity caught early is a small filling. Call us today — we are right here on University Ave.
Composite fillings work well in a wide range of situations. Here is what generally makes someone a good fit — and a few honest notes about when a different treatment is the better call.
Very large cavities, cracked teeth, or decay that has reached the nerve may need a crown, a root canal, or both instead of a filling alone. We will tell you honestly which path your tooth needs — we do not place fillings when a stronger restoration is the right call.
