Children's Dental Care Β· City Heights, San Diego
Getting kids to the dentist is easier when the office is in your own neighborhood. We are right here on University Ave between 52nd and 54th Streets, next to Vien Dong Supermarket β the same block many City Heights families pass every day. Whether your child is coming in for a very first checkup or a routine cleaning before the new school year, you don't have to cross town to make it happen.
We are a prevention-first family practice that has cared for children in this community for more than 30 years. Our goal is simple: help kids build healthy habits early, keep visits calm and straightforward, and catch small problems before they grow into bigger ones. We accept Denti-Cal, which covers dental care for many eligible children in California, as well as most major PPO plans β and our team speaks English, Spanish, and Vietnamese so you can talk with us in the language you're most comfortable with.
We are on the south side of University Ave between 52nd and 54th Streets, next to Vien Dong Supermarket β the heart of City Heights. Parking is on site. If you are coming from along University, Fairmount, or Euclid, you are only a few minutes away.
Children's dental needs change as they grow, so we tailor each visit to the child's age and comfort level. For toddlers and preschoolers, the first visit is gentle and short β mostly a look around, a light cleaning, and a conversation with the parent about what to expect as new teeth come in. For school-age kids and teenagers, visits include a thorough cleaning, an exam, digital X-rays on an appropriate schedule, and the preventive treatments that do the most good at each stage.
The treatments we focus on for children are the ones with the strongest track record for preventing problems: fluoride treatments that strengthen enamel, dental sealants applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to block the grooves where cavities start, and clear guidance on brushing and flossing habits. When a child does have a cavity, we treat it with a tooth-colored filling. In cases where a baby tooth is infected and worth saving until it falls out naturally, we can perform a pulpotomy β a procedure on the baby tooth that removes the affected tissue and keeps the tooth stable while the permanent tooth develops underneath.
We are transparent about the limits of what we do. Most children do very well in our office. If a child would be better served by a board-certified pediatric specialist β for example, if they need sedation for extensive treatment, or have significant behavioral or medical needs β we will tell you honestly and help you with a referral. Our job is to get kids the right care, not to overextend our scope.
When you arrive, our front desk will confirm your child's insurance or Denti-Cal coverage and collect any needed forms. If it's a first visit or your child is nervous, just let us know β we will give the team a heads-up so the hygienist can take extra time and go at the child's pace.
The hygienist cleans your child's teeth, checks for any early signs of decay or gum concerns, and applies fluoride. The dentist then examines the teeth, reviews any X-rays, and checks that the jaw and bite are developing the way they should.
If your child's permanent molars have come in, we will discuss dental sealants β a thin coating that seals off the grooves where most childhood cavities begin. This is one of the most cost-effective preventive steps available and is covered by Denti-Cal for eligible children.
We tell you and your child exactly what we found β in plain language, no alarm, no pressure. If a filling or other treatment is needed, we explain what it involves, what it costs, and what Denti-Cal or your insurance covers. You decide before anything is scheduled.
Ready to schedule your child's first visit?
These are the children's dental services we offer in our City Heights office. All of them are routinely performed here β no need to go elsewhere for these.
Complex cases that require sedation or hospital dentistry are beyond what we do in our office β if your child needs that level of care, we will let you know and refer you to the right provider.
