First 48 Hours -- The "White Diet"

Your teeth are more porous immediately after whitening and more susceptible to staining. For the first 48 hours, follow the "white diet":

AVOID these foods and beverages:

  • Coffee, tea, and dark sodas
  • Red wine and dark juices (grape, cranberry)
  • Berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)
  • Tomato sauce, soy sauce, and balsamic vinegar
  • Mustard and ketchup
  • Curry and turmeric
  • Chocolate
  • Tobacco products of any kind

SAFE foods and beverages include:

  • Water, milk, and clear beverages
  • White rice, pasta, and bread
  • Chicken, turkey, and white fish
  • Bananas, apples (peeled), and pears
  • Cauliflower, potatoes, and white cheese

Managing Sensitivity

Some sensitivity after whitening is common and temporary, usually lasting 1-3 days.

  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste (Sensodyne or similar) -- you can even apply it directly to sensitive teeth and leave it on for a few minutes.
  • Avoid very hot or very cold foods and beverages.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers can help if needed.
  • If sensitivity is severe or lasts more than a few days, contact our office.

Maintaining Your Results

  • Brush twice daily with a whitening or fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to prevent staining between teeth.
  • Rinse your mouth with water after consuming staining foods or drinks.
  • Use a straw for coffee, tea, or dark beverages to minimize contact with teeth.
  • Schedule regular professional cleanings every 6 months.
  • Touch-up whitening treatments can be done as recommended by your dentist.

What NOT to Do

  • Do not use colored mouthwash for 48 hours after whitening.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco products -- this is the fastest way to re-stain your teeth.
  • Do not use abrasive toothpastes (baking soda based) for the first week.
  • Do not brush aggressively -- be gentle, especially while sensitivity is present.

When Results May Fade

Whitening results typically last 6 months to 2 years depending on your diet, oral hygiene habits, and whether you use tobacco. Touch-up treatments are available to maintain your bright smile. Talk to us about a maintenance plan that works for you.
