After Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

Instructions for recovery after your deep cleaning procedure.

Last updated: 2025-01-01

What to Expect

  • Soreness and tenderness in your gums for a few days is normal.
  • Minor bleeding when brushing or flossing may occur for several days.
  • Your teeth may feel more sensitive than usual, especially to hot and cold.
  • Your gums may appear to recede slightly as swelling goes down -- this is the gums healing and tightening around your teeth, which is a good sign.

Pain Management

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help with discomfort.
  • Rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of warm water) 2-3 times daily to soothe your gums.
  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste (Sensodyne or similar) to help with tooth sensitivity.
  • If prescribed a medicated mouth rinse (such as chlorhexidine), use it as directed.

Oral Hygiene

  • Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Do not scrub aggressively.
  • Resume flossing after 24 hours, being gentle around treated areas.
  • Warm salt water rinses 2-3 times daily, especially after meals.
  • Good home care is essential to the success of your deep cleaning treatment.

Diet

  • Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, and acidic foods for 48 hours.
  • Choose lukewarm, soft foods for the first day or two.
  • Stay hydrated with water.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours.

Follow-Up Care

Important:Follow-up appointments are very important after deep cleaning. They allow us to monitor your healing and determine if additional treatment is needed.
  • Keep all scheduled follow-up appointments.
  • Maintenance cleanings are typically recommended every 3-4 months after a deep cleaning, rather than the standard 6 months.
  • Your dentist will let you know when you can return to a regular cleaning schedule.
